Week 8

This week we talked about electricity which is the flow of electrical energy through a conductive material.
- Electronic makes use of electrical properties to convey information
- Current (I)
- Voltage (v)
- Resistance (R)
- Power (w) watt

This forms the basis of Ohm's law.
- Short circuit must be avoided, it is when you connect positive and negative of battery without forming a circuit
- Conductors are materials through which electrical current moves freely (copper, silver, gold)
- Insulators (wood, plastic)
- DC (direct current), AC (alternating current)
- spst switch
- Diodes allow the flow of electricity in one direction
- Voltage regulators filter and lower the input voltage to 5 volts

Week 7

Today we talked a little bit about typography since the 16th century.
- pictogram alphabet; cave paintings
- different cultures & alphabet
- cuneiform first true written language
- papyrus plant to make scrolls instead of rocks
- movable type in China
- font comes from french word (fonte)

The first type writer was made by a gun manufacturer.
- linotype, phototypesetting, kerning

Assignment;

rework the personal memory map

Week 6

During class we talked about layers and transparency.
- Layers are simultaneous, over-lapping
- maps are and example of use of layers of dates
- layers of ink to build single image--> Ryan McGiness - layered work, symbolic icons
- become narrative, bring element of time
- example of layers; collage
--> introduced by cubist artists

- Transparency gives clarity and directness
- creat dense layered imagery
- digital transparency

Assignment #5:

I had to create a memory map which was quite hard to do considering I've got over 19 years of my life to summarize in an 8 by 12 inch rectangle. I decided to not include dates nor words except for that one phrase which is what I base my life on. All the images are simple but represent something deeper. It is intended to be messy since my memories are not in a specific order.

Week 5

This week we walked about figure/ground, framing and hierarchy. Figure/ground relationships shape the visual perception. The negative and positive spces can change depending on the figure itself.
- Figure/ground adds energy to an image, shifts direction and impact
- What is left out is built in
- Time based mediums -> books, balance
- If shape is darker it becomes more powerful when accompanied by other elements
- Three types of figure; stable, reversable, ambiguous

Secondly, framing brings attention to work, cropping, borders margins and captions. Margin is additional space.
- Image and text together draw attention to a certain point; can be dominant or subordinant, it also isolates part of an image

Thirdly, hierarchy is the order of importance within a social group or in a body of text. Everywhere in the world there is order such as in the army, in families, etc.

Assignment #4:
